Staehle, Albert

Albert Staehle was America’s most memorable animal illustrator. He originated “Smokey the Bear”, “The Swan” soap symbol, the precursor of “Elsie the Cow” and hundreds of prize-winning paintings. “Butch”, his real life cocker spaniel, appeared on many Brown & Bigelow calendars and playing cards. Butch was America’s cover dog and was sworn in as the official mascot of the U.S. Navy.

Brown & Bigelow has numerous images available from Albert Staehle, however no digital images are currently available. If you are interested in Albert Staehle images, please contact us at archivist@brownandbigelow.com
